FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 What is yoga?

The word yoga, comes from the Sanskrit work yuj which means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union”.   We can think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit in a mindful or conscious way.
Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago and was passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition.  It was not until around 200 B.C. that the Indian sage Patanjali compiled the teachings into what is known as the “Yoga Sutras of Patanjali”.  The Yoga Sutras are the basis of today’s yoga philosophy and also provide practical instructions on how to achieve the benefits of yoga.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises; known as asanas or postures.  The word Hatha means forceful and is translated as Ha meaning “sun” and thameaning “moon”.  Which refers to the balance of masculine aspects – active, hot, sun – and feminine aspects – receptive, cool, moon- within all or us.  Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites – in our physical bodies, we develop a balance of strength and flexibility.

How often should I practice yoga?

As often as you can!  Practicing yoga is an amazing experience, even if you only practice for one hour a week; you will experience the benefits of the practice.  If you are able to do more than that, you will experience more benefits that yoga has to offer.  Do whatever you can and feel great about what you did; whether for 20 min. or 90 min.  You will find that after some time you want to do more yoga, and will find the time.

Is yoga the same as stretching?

Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility.    Unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical postures. Patanjali’s eight-fold path illustrates how the physical practice is just one aspect of yoga.  Even within the physical practice, yoga is unique because we connect the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of our breath.  Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward.  We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment. Yoga not only exercises your body but your mind as well.  Having a healthy body and mind brings way to a more fulfilling life.

Is yoga for anyone?

Yes!  In fact, yoga is for everyone!  Some people feel that they have to be flexible to do yoga.  In fact, you would be the perfect candidate for yoga!  It may take a few classes to feel comfortable, which is normal.  You just take your practice at your own pace, and you will find that the poses/postures in the class will help you become more flexible.

What do I need to start?

v The most important thing you need is your body and an open mind
v Make sure to wear comfortable clothing (a little fitted to your body)
v Bottle of water
v Yoga Mat

Why should I practice yoga on an empty stomach?

As with any exercise, you don’t want to do in on the full stomach.  If you have not digested your last meal, it may make you feel uncomfortable.  If you find that you get hungry during class, and need a little energy, try a light snack about 30 minutes to an hour before class.

I have an injury, can I still do yoga?

We ask that you obtain a doctor’s note stating any limitations of movement.  This is to ensure that you and the instructor know which poses are not suitable for your practice.  If at anytime you find any pose to uncomfortable, just take a break either resting fully or doing a simple pose that can help you concentrate on your breath.
